He came home to Ethiopia in 1996 after 20 years in United States where he spent eight years pursuing higher education and twelve years as a Wall Street investment banker in New York and Los Angeles. Over the course of twelve years as an investment banker with Kidder Peabody & Company, a top Wall Street investment bank, he advised and raised capital for some of the largest corporate entities in the US across a broad range of industries including airlines, banking, health care, insurance, real estate, retail, technology and asset backed securities.
Since returning to Ethiopia, his list of accomplishments includes:
Founder and Chairman of Zemen Bank S.C. - Ethiopia’s Five Star Bank.
Founder, Chairman & CEO of Access Capital Service S.C. - the first Investment Bank, Ethiopia.
Founder, Chairman and CEO of Access Real Estate S.C. - one of the largest
real estate company’s in Ethiopia.
Established or acquired over twenty enterprises employing over 2,000 workers.
African Enterprise Network
His continental level engagement in Africa includes being the founding chairman of the African enterprise Network (“AEN”) and institutional association of over four hundred leading new generation business men and women in twenty-nine Sub Saharan African countries.
The AEN worked with the highest levels of the member countries’ governments, continental development organizations such as NEPAD, regional economic associations and international development partners on economic and business policy, promoting inter-Africa trade and development finance.
As an expert economist, he has been a frequent speaker on development strategy at major international conferences hosted by the African Development Bank, the Economic Commission for Africa, the World Bank, the International Growth Center/London School of Economics. He has conducted research projects with Yale University.
He was the African private sector representative at “The Big Table” a biannual two day brainstorming retreat held by 27 donor country ministers of finance/development assistance and heads of continental and global multilateral development agencies.
